Question about mixmaster

I noticed when I was fighting mixmaster with mirage his sp3 was dealing way to much damage. So I did some testing and fought mixmaster with rhinox and let him use his sp3.
I noticed that when mixmaster dumps acid on rhinox it removed 3 of his shields. So is his acid a melee attack?
Not sure if this is a bug or not but it makes every tech bot’s shielding useless against him except for rhinox.
Just want to know anyone’s thoughts on this are and if anyone else experienced this.

I thought that was only for resistance buffs that were similar to ultra magnus. It doesn’t make sense if mirages shielding has no effect and it says that rhinox’s shields are only removed by melee attacks.
I should have explained it better, I’m not talking about the acid debuff itself. I’m talking about the actual damage from his sp3.

If you’re right then this must be a very poor design choice.
