S3 behaves differently for human vs AI

So I'm playing chapter 3.4, first map (with G1 Megatron boss) and I fight a Demo shark with Arcee. At the end of the fight, two things happen. The first is that I get knocked down, filling my S3, but despite me hammering away at my special button the shark gets to throw his S2 into my face as soon as I'm on my feet, costing me another chunk of health. Then as I get up again, he throws a heavy. This time, my S3 activates and ends the fight, but guess what? HIS HEAVY CONNECTS ANYWAYS, leaving Arcee with 1 hp after the fight. Now I've played this game for awhile and thrown quite a few heavies into an S3 trying to end the match, but the S3 animation cuts off the attack and it basically never happened. So why did I get hit?
Really getting tired of the AI playing with an entirely different rulebook. If I quit, that'll be like 94% of the reason why.
