Question on raid defense and synergies

I've noticed in the past that adding a higher pi bot to my defense with no synergy, may add less to the total strength than a bot with less pi but several synergies... Do they actually apply or is it just a display error? Would certainly change how I set up my defense if they do, would appreciate some clarification on this.

    Synergies do not apply to bots on defense, will be too OP with mods according to Kabam. The base defense displayed is with masteries attached, but when you check raid history and those who raided you, your base defense is displayed with just the bare numbers with out masteries applied.
