Phone heats up when game is paused but not put to background

I am using iPhone 6S with the latest iOS.
Does anyone has this experience before.
I paused the game mid-fight (all fight modes) and leave the game at the foreground for about 10 minutes, the game would heat up the phone so much that it burnt my finger when I pick it up. The heat is even worse than after 2 hours of game play.
I am quite surprised by this, since the game is paused, I would assume the demand on the phone would be reduced but it seems instead the game demanded more from the phone.
I am worried if this game may one day fried my phone if I ever forgot to put it to background.
